Six Steps for a Thriving Retirement

  • Retirement Tips

The key to a fulfilling retirement is a balanced approach to maintaining your health, finances, and passions. After decades of hard work, saving, and sacrifices, it’s essential to prioritize your well-being so you can enjoy your golden years as you deserve. Incorporate these six simple steps into your daily routine for a successful retirement.

1) Build a Community

It can be easy to feel isolated as you age. The good news is you are not alone. Build your community based on things you genuinely enjoy doing. Whether you enjoy lounging by the pool, gardening, or another hobby, there are plenty of clubs in or near your hometown to join – you just have to look. When in doubt, try attending an event through your local Senior Center.

2) Turn Your Passions Into Purpose

It’s important to have hobbies you are passionate about, but it’s even better to have passions that you can turn into a purpose. You may have to get creative, but there is always a way for your pastime to serve a bigger purpose. For example, instead of endless knitting for yourself, look to donate homemade scarves to a shelter. If you enjoy reading, see if your library needs volunteers to read to children. Not only will you spend your time doing what you love, but you’ll get to help others in the process.

3) Organize Your Finances

It’s never too late to get your finances in order. First, you’ll want to become organized, so you have all your ducks in a row. Create a binder or filing cabinet for all your financial documents, including a list of monthly expenses and plans for potential costs that may arise, such as medical emergencies or in-home care.

4) Consider a HECM Loan

The best way to ensure your finances are for retirement is by creating a safety net. A Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), the most common type of reverse mortgage, is a great way to access your home’s equity to eliminate monthly mortgage payments and cover things like in-home care and medical bills.

5) Maintain an Eating Schedule

It’s crucial to maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated, especially as you age. Seniors lose the sensation of thirst and interest in food as they age, putting them at a higher risk of dehydration and unhealthy weight loss. To combat this, have a glass of water with every meal, even if you aren’t thirsty. Additionally, turn your meals into a social time spent with neighbors, family, and friends.

6) Move Your Body

Staying active has significant benefits, both physically and mentally. For example, since you lose muscle mass as you age, bodyweight exercises, like chair workouts, are vital for maintaining mobility and strength. Or you can start going for walks more often—malls make an excellent place for this, too. Whatever you decide, try to commit to a routine.
